The Game Within the Game

Posted in World of Warcraft on March 19, 2010 by Armada

Peggle? Bejeweled? No the best mini game in all of WoW is called Auction House!

I have recently delved into the world of speculation and profiteering in game and I have to admit I am having a blast (and making a mint). Over the course of the next few months I will relay all that I have learned. I do not proclaim to be an expert by any means, but I have learned enough to turn a 2k gold investment into what is now 23k and growing!

So lets have a little fun with speculation!

Frozen Orb Prices…

With the recent Blizzard announcement that Frozen Orbs (dropped at the end of random dungeons, last boss) will be used as a form of currency in an upcoming patch, we saw prices jump from 5G to now as high as 25G in anticipation. So what is my stance? I have been watching this market closely and I am now convinced that they will end up (at least in the short term) crashing in price. I now have almost 500 saved up (free through randoms and bought on the AH with a mean average of around 8G)  and plan to dump them over the next week while the price is still decent (20G), undercutting when I need to and then keeping 150 for my own use.

My prediction is to look for a possible and VERY brief spike (or more than likely a hold in current price) as clueless players will want them immediately after patch release for purchasing the new items. However within hours to days I suspect a crash as the sheer number of people stock piling these just for the purpose of selling in an expected demand driven market will drive the price DOWN.

Perhaps long term they could spike again, but I predict that within one week of the patch, you will see 5-10 pages of them at or under 10g.

So sell them if you have extra or expect the price to drop as much as 50%.

The Biggest WoW Failure

Posted in World of Warcraft on March 14, 2010 by Armada

I must preface this post by stating the obvious. WoW is a superior, polished and ever improving game. Blizzard certainly has had the Midas touch. That said Blizzard is not perfect and they have made their share of mistakes in the World… of Warcraft.

What is the one single mechanic or design decision by Blizzard in WoW that wasted resources or failed to make an impact? I have a few in mind, PvP and Arenas (I long for the old school PvP system and titles). But hands down the biggest waste of time and resources in my opinion that should have been used elsewhere is the WoW Voice (VoIP) mechanic. Does anyone even use this feature? I bet some do not know it exists!

Blizzard tried to take over the (in game) VoIP market and effectively remove Ventrilo and Teamspeak from the MMO equation (at least in terms of WoW) but in the end, at least in the small skirmish arena called VoIP, Vent crushed Blizzard and the effort and resources could have better be used on many other features or improvements.

Are you aware of any raid guilds running WoW Voice?

Let me know if you can think of a bigger in game waste of time and/or failed design mechanic!

Your One Thing

So lets enter the realm of fantasy. You are a lead developer for Blizzard for one single week and you alone get to make ONE and only ONE change or improvement to the Word of Warcraft… what would it be?

Let me start your creative juices flowing with my one wish:

Create a mechanisim that would automatically take older gear found in classic and BC dungeons and raids and make it BOE . I completely understand why ICC gear cannot be BOE (Bind on Equip as opposed to Bind on Pickup) due to the farming and subsequent economy crash. However being able to go back and farm say Karazhan, Stratholme, Black Temple, Molten Core, BWL, et al for boss gear and then letting that outfit alts and hit the AH would be a great boost to diversity and even the economy.

The gear is obviously not going to be used at end game, so there is not balance issue, but it would liven up those dungeons, add diversity, add to the economy and generally only improve the game. Additionally the same could be said for upgradable classic gear and a battle group wide auction house, but that would be two more improvements and cheating.

So what would you improve?
